To kick off the New Year I have a list of some of the worst chemicals to look out for in your skincare products, put together by Sabrina at Flora Organica, a natural and organic online store.
The really scary thing is that there are hundreds and hundreds of chemical ingredients that are used in cosmetics and everyday products that have not been tested and we don’t even know the full effect they will have on our health.
Of the ones that we know, there is certainly strong scientific evidence that these chemicals have been linked to some pretty horrific diseases that have become all too common in todays society.
Artificial Fragrance (Parfum/fragrance/aroma)
Around 95 per cent of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic, petroleum derived compounds. These can potentially cause neurological problems, respiratory and skin irritation, migraines, asthma, cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders, allergic reactions and multiple chemical sensitivities.
Chanel number 5 may smell nice and Brad Pitt does a nice job selling it, but it is actually doing you more harm then you realise.
A golden oldie in toxic beauty circles, these substances have a chemical structure surprisingly like estrogen’s. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) itself admits that all parabens have endocrine-disrupting effects. Meaning the body thinks you have extra estrogen – weight gain, depression, even cancer and birth abnormalities can result.
It doesn’t take a science degree to understand that anything derived from crude oil can’t be good for you. Petrolatum, mineral oil, petroleum jelly – it goes by many names but these crude oil derivatives, whilst leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth, not only interrupt the skin’s own moisturising powers, they can cause breakouts, cell sluggishness and great sun susceptibility. Petrochemicals are also a hotbed for contamination and are of course, extremely not sustainable. However, they are CHEAP!
Vogue called one product (I won’t name the product but you can google the claim) ‘probably the best cleanser in the world’. The first ingredient on its label – Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil). But if that wasn’t bad enough you also get a cocktail of parabens too – Methylparaben, Bht, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben.
At $115 for 100ml it’s just madness.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
SLS, a detergent, is found in approximately 90% of commercial shampoos, including “no more tears” baby shampoos as well as toothpastes, bubble baths and shower gel. It makes a product bubble and foam.
SLS is an industrial floor cleaner and degreasant that is a known skin irritant and modifies the structure of the skin’s outer layer, enabling easier absorption of other more toxic chemicals. There is evidence to suggest that Sodium laureth sulphate (SLS), touted as a milder alternative, can cause reproductive effects and damage to liver, lungs & immune system.
So if, like me, you want to be the best version of yourself in 2013 give the toxic ingredients the flick! You are worth it! To kick-start a healthier you in 2013 you can get a 10% discount at Flora Organica. The codeword is ‘rawandpure’ and is valid for two weeks (expires 18.01.13).
